"Pewaukeean Jumps into Lake - While friends and a deputy sheriff watched helplessly, an 80 year old Pewaukee man jumped from a rowboat into Pewaukee lake Tuesday afternoon, and drowned himself. Authorities continued dragging the lake today for the man identified as Eugene Himebauch.
The sheriff's department received a call at 3 p.m. Tuesday that a man "who has tried to commit suicide before" was acting peculiarly in a boat in the middle of Pewaukee Lake.
Deputy Richard Oemig was assigned to investigate and as he arrived at the Herbert Kienast residence on the south side of the lake he observed the man jump into the lake. Mrs. Kienast was observing Himebauch through a pair of field glasses. He had lately taken residence at the Kienast cottage.
Boats were immediately sent to the scene but no trace of the man's body could be found. The rowboat had drifted while authorities were approaching the scene and it could not be determined which spot Himebauch made his death leap. It was estimated the water is seven to eight feet in the general area.
Oemig recovered the rowboat and found that one of the two anchors in the boat had been broken off. It was guessed that Himebauch used the anchor a a weight. In addition, Oemig found a note addressed "To Whom it May Concern" lying in the boat. The note read in part: "Just a few lines. Just a few lines. I cant write because I shank so. I am going away now so want to bid you all good by. you all have bin so good to me"
"Tell Art he can play his TV as late as he wishes and as loud as he wishes. I am going to meet Alta now" Alta was tentatively identified as a housekeeper for Himebauch. She was reported to have died about four or five months ago.
The farewell note was written on the back of a letter from the Waukesha County welfare department. The undated letter told Himebauch that his old age assistance allowance had been increased from 96 to 99 a month effective May 1, 1953."6Waukesha Daily Freeman, Newspaper Article: U.S., Wisconsin, Waukesha County, 9 Jul 1952.
