Henry Wyss

letter by Walther E. Wyss Nov. 21, 1974. May have been born in Ohio.

Notes from personal interview with Walther E. Wyss, son of Hans Wyss.
May 28, 1989. Walther said Henry changed name to Weiss because of so
many people miss pronouncing it. Went to Ohio State.

email dated 1 Aug 2003. I am Paul Merritt Bassett (28/5/1935), grandson of Henry W. Wiess (he changed the spelling and added the W for business reasons) (1/2/1887-2/12/1954). Henry W Wiess was born in or near Winesburg or Wilmot in Holmes County, and d. in Columbus, Ohio. He was a CPA with an office in the Atlas Bldg., 8 E. Long St., Columbus. (One sibling, Frank, also b. in or near Winesburg or Wilmot. Confusion in the records about year: was 1887 or 1889. Some have Henry b. in 1889; Frank in 1887. 1/2 date is correct for Henry). Henry m. Mary Ethel Abbott (b. 10/3/1889 in Tedrow, Dover Twp.,Fulton County, Ohio; d. 18/12/1944, Columbus, Ohio), 11/4/1911, probably in Fostoria, Ohio. Henry and Mary Ethel had 5 children: Ruth Abbott (her middle name, for which, in her teen years, she often used Anne) [b. 14/2/1915 in Briggsdale {Columbus}, Ohio; d. Troy, Ohio, 29/12/1994]: Henry True, b. c. 1917, Briggsdale; d. 2002, Valley Springs (?), CA: Wynn Wilmot (b. 1919, Columbus; d. 1998, Columbus: Bruce Christian, b. 1922 (?), Columbus; d. Seattle, WA, 1996 (?): Paul Franklin, b. April, 1925, Columbus, still living in Columbus). After Mary Ethel died, Henry W. married again, 1947, Bessie Stephenson. Of her whereabouts, I know nothing past the burial of my grandfather, Henry.

I am the oldest grandchild of Henry and Mary Ethel Wiess and the oldest child of Ruth Abbott Wiess, who married (Rev.) Paul Gardner Bassett (b. 27/11/1910 in Grand Rapids, Mich.; d. 1/8/2001, Plainview, Minn.), 7/8/1934, in Columbus, Ohio. I have three siblings, two living.

On page 188 of Walther Maas' book, "Zur Siedlungskunde Westpreussens 1466-1772,"
Georg Dabinnus was mentioned as one of the first researchers who had viewed and
published general reports of the 1772 land registry of Frederick the Great.
Maas suggested actual names were preserved from this West Prussian land
registry. Through discussions with many genealogical experts in Germany the
filmed documents of the 1772 land registry, called Kontributionskataster (KK),
were discovered at the Marburg State Archive, Marburg, Germany. I have copies
of these eleven KK films and will give these to one of the Germans from Russia
institutions at a later date.

The KK was filmed off typed sheets already extracted from the German script in
the 1920's. Additional statistical information is on the film but was not
extracted onto this database. Generally, in addition to the full name of the
head of household there are 7 columns of data:

Number of adult males in household
Wife, listed as a statistic (1 or left blank)
Number of boys over/under 12
Number of girls over/under 12
Number of male hired workers
Number of female hired workers
Total number of persons in household.

If you find a surname in a particular town which interests you which could be
your ancestor, then you may e-mail me a request to check this name for more
details from the film.

Unfortunately, the Netze River District, an area that is especially important to
Germans of Bessarabian descent, is not included in these transcriptions because
we could not obtain written permission to post the Netze counties on the
Internet from the Bromberg State Archive which currently holds these documents.
However, I have the extracted information in my possession from three microfilms
of the Netze River District Counties.

In summary I would advise that the importance of this land registry lies in
finding the surname and the town/village of the surname. My hope is that this
document might give some early clue regarding the town in which your ancestor
lived in the year 1772 that will lead you to verify the information through
church records or other sources. Following below is a more formal description
of the history of the KK. - RRD

Introduction:
------------
After the occupation of West Prussia and the District of the Netze River by
Prussia during the first partition of Poland in the year 1772, the Geheime
Finanzrat Rembert Roden was ordered by Frederick the Great to prepare a land
survey of these territories. The land survey should produce the necessary
foundation for the introduction of the Prussian taxation system in the new
territory. In the years 1772/73 three commissions with about 60 officials and 40
surveyors were occupied with this work. For each town a land register was
established which could contain up to 91 items.

HISTORY: Kiev, Ukraine

Ukrainians are deeply affected by the country's long history that predates the independent state by some 1,500 years. The march of successive civilizations from prehistoric times, the Scythians, Greeks, Varaungian, Slavic, and Turkic peoples have all left their mark. The birthplace of the Slavic state was Kyivan-Rus which flourished a thousand years ago.

There is an old legend which tells of three brothers who found Kiev at the end of the fifth century. The brothers Kiy, Khoriv, and Shchek, along with their sister, Lybid, decided to name this newly founded land "Kyiv," after their elder brother.

Kiev bloomed during the end of the ninth century as a political center inhabited by Eastern Slavs. Kiev had an advantageous trade route in the center of Europe which allowed it to maintain political and economic ties with the West.

In 988, Kiev's Prince Volodymyr the Great introduced Christianity to Kiev making it the official religion of Kyivan-Rus. This move played an important role in Kiev's political development and cultural relations with the European and Near Eastern countries.

In 1240, Kiev was invaded by the Tatar-Mongols led by the grandson of Genghis Khan. The city was captured and its glory fell into decline during the period of almost century-long rule by the Tatar-Mongols.

For many centuries thereafter Ukraine was attacked and ruled by Poland and Lithuanian in the Rzecz Polpolita Commonwealth, Russia, Germany and others. During this time Ukrainian Cossack armies were formed which were led by a Hetman (military leader). One of the most famous Hetman is Bohdan Khmelnytsky who inspired one of the greatest Cossack uprisings that led to the liberation of Kiev in 1648. He was considered by some a traitor after he signed the Treaty of Pereyaslav which authorized protection from the Russian Czar. This treaty joined Ukraine and Russia into one and led to a long period of domination by the Russian Empire and ultimately the Soviet Union.

After the revolution of 1917 Vladimir Illyich Lenin and his Bolshevik Party seized power and expanded their sphere of control into Ukraine.

Ukraine experienced a brief period of independence when on January 22, 1918, the Ukrainian Central Rada (Council) formally issued a proclamation for Ukraine's independence. But shortly thereafter in 1919, the Ukrainian National Republic was defeated in a war against Polish expansionists and overrun once again.
