"When Phillip died Evelyn was left with 11 children to care for. She was a lady of refinement and the struggle to maintain her family was a hard, but sucessful one. In 1843 she took her family to the Wisconsin Territory , traveling ina covered wagon. Her son Daniel had gone to Wisconsin earlier that year. An 1873 Walworth County Atlas shows Daniel as the owner of 120 acres in East Troy Twp., Sec. 25. His mother owned 40 acres and his brother Benjamin owned another 40, all of which adjoined the farm of John Crites."

The land we call Ohio today was part the Northwest Territory that the United States won by defeating the British in the Revolutionary War. Ohio was admitted into the Union as the 17th state in 1803.
1810 U.S. Census records for Ohio destroyed by fire. One of two counties in the Illinois Territory was lost, and Ohio suffered a near complete loss with only Washington County surviving.

Biography: Per Geneva Nichols, family history was that Rebecca McAtee wife of Joseph could read and write and that her husband Joseph could not. She would read for him and help him prepare his sermons which he would give from memory. He was a circuit preacher for many years and later United Brethren Chuch in Cascades first preacher in 1872. Church later became United Methodist Church. He preached beginning in 1854. Reverand Joseph H. Nichols.

Scioto is Shawnee Indian name with definitions of Falling water, fresh water or hairy. Shawnee language never reduced to writing. Originally part of Augusta County, Virginia (formed 30 Oct 1745) which included nearly all the states of Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, West Virginia, Illinois and Western Pennsylvania. In 1769 Botetourt County, Virginia formed which had Scioto County in it. Scioto formed in 1783, part of Northwest Territory. Part of Scioto made into Adams and Washington counties. 1802 state of Ohio formed.

The Virginia Military District. 22 Counties and parts of Ohio, between Scioto and Little Miami rivers. 6507 miles, 4 million acres. Oct 1779 bounties in lands to officers and soldiers of Virginia in Revolutionary War. 200-15,000 acres depending on rank.
